Kolkata: The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has transformed into a cyclonic storm named Ramal, which is likely to hit the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh at a speed of 110-120 km per hour on Sunday night, IM said.

This is the first cyclone over the Bay of Bengal this season.

The IMD said the weather system, moving at a speed of 12 km per hour over the east-central Bay of Bengal, was about 350 km south-southeast of Sagar Island in West Bengal at 5.30 pm on Saturday.

Moving northwards, it is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by Sunday morning and cross West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara by midnight with wind speed of 110 to 120 kmph. There is a possibility of speed, which can reach up to 135 kmph. sunday.

The IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall over coastal districts of West Bengal and heavy to very heavy rainfall over North Odisha on May 26 and 27 due to the weather system.

Extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over Assam and Meghalaya, and heavy to very heavy rainfall over other northeastern states such as Manipur, Nagaland Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura on May 27 and 28.
