New Delhi: Police have arrested a 24-year-old man from Jamtara in Jharkhand for defrauding a Delhi resident of Rs 2 lakh in a cyber crime, officials said on Thursday.

Police said four high-end smartphones were seized from the accused Amrul Ansari, who was arrested on Wednesday.

"On March 19, a woman filed an online complaint in which she said she received a call from an unknown number. The caller said her Indian Post parcel was delayed for some reason and she would have to pay Rs 3 ,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Rohit Meena.

Later, Meena said, she received a link from a customer support number asking for a payment of Rs 3.

"As soon as she clicked on the link, no money was deducted from her account. But later she got a call from her bank and came to know that Rs 1.79 lakh and Rs 21,000 had been debited from her account, after which she realised. What happened was that we were cheated,” said the DCP.

Police said that upon examining the bank account details and traces of money, they identified Ansari as the accused and arrested him from Jamtara.

The DCP noted that the police conducted a challenging operation to nab Ansari as he was operating from Jamtara, one of the country's most notorious hotspots for cyber crime.

"After sustained interrogation, he confessed to his involvement in the crime and four smartphones along with SIM cards were recovered from him," Meena said, adding that Ansari was earlier involved in another case.
