Mumbai, local trains on the Central Railway's harbor line now take 2-3 minutes less to cover the distance between Tilak Nagar and Panvel stations as their maximum speed on this corridor has been increased from 80 kmph to 95 kmph , an official said Wednesday.

The increase in the speed limit has resulted in a “reduction in travel time” and an “improvement in punctuality,” CR said in a statement.

The CR Port Corridor provides suburban connectivity to Navi Mumbai and western suburbs of Mumbai from South Mumbai. It is distributed between CSMT-Goregaon and CSMT-Panvel. Local trains can reach the maximum speed limit of 95 kmph between Tilak Nagar and Panvel.

“This (increase in speed limit) has resulted in reduction in travel time from 2 to 3 minutes on the Tilaknagar-Panvel stretch with improvement in punctuality as well, which will be incorporated in the new timetable,” the statement said.

According to the statement, various infrastructure measures, including strengthening of tracks, modification of overhead equipment (OHE), signaling and other technical works, are being carried out to increase the speed of trains.

The statement said it was previously not possible to increase speed beyond 80 kmph due to "braking distance adequacy" limitations.

"To facilitate the increase in speed, rakes with equivalent speed potential are being used, which will also improve the possibilities of modernizing the rakes for better service," the statement said.

CR stated that to ensure the safety of trains in operation and greater travel comfort for passengers, the tracks are being maintained to best standards and replacement of "old assets" is also being carried out on priority.

"The (maximum) speed of trains has been increased after ensuring all safety aspects and technical inspection by concerned officials," the statement said.

Of the more than 30 lakh daily commuters in CR, 9-10 lakh use the port corridor, where 614 services are provided.
