Chennai, CRPF is helping the children of its personnel killed in action or awarded gallantry medals to secure seats in technical streams like artificial intelligence, computer science and electronics through special MoUs with premier institutes.

The country's largest paramilitary force has so far signed such memorandums with 31 universities, 22 of which are located in Tamil Nadu, officials said.

He said that this initiative was started last year and the results are now visible.

He said that as part of the scheme, tuition fees for the entire course of the candidate is waived off and the families of such personnel have to bear only the hostel and mess charges.

A total of seven categories have been created as part of this welfare initiative, with children of personnel killed in action given the highest priority, followed by disabled people and those killed in action.The required criteria to avail the benefits of this scheme is that the student should have obtained minimum 60 percent marks in his/her class 12 examination.

Karthika S, daughter of slain CRPF head constable M Subramaniam, is happy to start her 2024-25 academic session at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, located in the state's Chengalpattu district.Subramaniam sacrificed his life during an anti-Naxal operation in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh in May 2010.

He is among three such students who have been offered seats in this college for the current academic year, while the other two have got the Computer Science Engineering (CSE) stream.

Difixlin Josie CM, whose father made the supreme sacrifice during an anti-Maoist operation in Chhattisgarh in 2013, said, “I have been studying B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering since last year. C. Muthamizhchelvan, Pro Vice Chancellor, SRM University, says his institution has tied up with the CRPF for this initiative as they wanted to ensure good education for the children of those who sacrificed their lives in the service of the country.

He said, “CRPF is a versatile force looking after the internal security of the country.It has the highest number of casualties among the security forces and we wanted to provide good education to the children of those who made the supreme sacrifice."

Officials said the CRPF has signed similar MoUs with institutes based in Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka and a total of 297 seats are on offer in these institutes.

The entire tuition and registration fee, which comes to around Rs 18-20 lakh for the entire course, has been completely waived. Families will have to bear the cost of accommodation and food, he said.

The CRPF, the country's largest paramilitary force with around 3.25 lakh personnel, is the premier internal security force with its three main operating theaters being Left Wing Extremism affected areas, counter-terrorism duties in Jammu and Kashmir and counter-insurgency operations in the North East.According to the data, 2,262 personnel have been killed in action so far.
