New Delhi, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been awarded the highest number of 52 Police Gallantry Medals on the occasion of 78th Independence Day.

The Union Home Ministry announced the names of the award winners on Wednesday.

Of the total medals, 25 decorations have been awarded for actions during operations in Jammu and Kashmir, while 27 have been awarded for anti-Maoist operations in various Left Wing Extremism-affected states, a senior CRPF official said.

The awardees also include Sub-Inspector Roshan Kumar, who has been awarded the gallantry medal posthumously for his heroic action against Maoists in Bihar in February 2019.

The official said that Assistant Commandant Teja Ram Chaudhary has been awarded two gallantry medals this time for his courage in different operations against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.

CRPF is followed by Jammu and Kashmir Police, which has received 31 gallantry medals, while 17 each have been received by police officers from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The CRPF is the largest paramilitary force in the country with around 3.25 lakh personnel and is primarily deployed for operations in Jammu and Kashmir, North-Eastern states and Naxalite violence-hit states, besides protecting several high-risk VIPs.
