Doda/Jammu, Amid multi-layered security arrangements, a demonstration of 'Nari Shakti' (women power) was held at all-women staffed booths, known as 'Pink Booths', in Doda district of Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency.

These 'pink booths' attracted more women voters, especially from the Musli community.

More than 22 per cent voters exercised their franchise in the first four hours of polling in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur parliamentary constituency despite torrential rains in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections, election officials said.

As soon as polling began this morning, despite heavy rain, a large number of women voters gathered at the 'Pink Booth' set up at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Dodd city to exercise their franchise. Standing in the queue, they were happy to vote at the 'pink booth'.Arifa Begum, who cast her vote at the 'Pink Booth' in Doda, said, "We are very happy to vote for the first time at these all-women polling stations. There are very good facilities there. We are enjoying voting."

He said that this initiative has increased the crowd of women at the polling booth. He said, “We appreciate this initiative of the Election Commission.,

Nineteen 'Pink Booths' have been set up in the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency. Officials said that all the staff at these model polling stations, including all-women polling stations, police and security personnel, are women.

First-time voter Sunita Devi, who cast her vote at the 'pink booth', said she felt as if she had come to a festive place as the booth was decorated. “Such initiatives will attract more women to polling stations and that will happen.” Increase voting percentage, he said this is an innovative step to increase women voting percentage.Election officials said that crowds had gathered to vote since morning. The initiative seems to have attracted more women voters this time, he said.

Voting began at 7 am at 2,637 polling stations across the constituency, with over 16.23 lakh voters eligible to exercise their franchise. Officials said it was going on peacefully and no untoward incident was reported.

The voting will decide the fate of 12 candidates, including Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who is eyeing a third term after winning the seat for the BJP in 2014 and 2019.This is the first major electoral battle after the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories on August 5, 2019.

Other prominent people in the fray include Congress leader and two-time former MP Chaudhary Lal Singh and DPAP's GM Saruri, besides six independents.

Officials said more than 11,000 polling staff, including reserves, have been deployed, while tight security arrangements have been made to ensure free and fair elections.

According to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, a total of 1,472 polling stations out of 2,637 have been equipped with webcasting facilities in the constituency, which has a diverse constituency with 16,23,195 eligible voters.

These include 845,283 males, 777,899 females and 13 third gender voters.Of the 2,637 polling stations, 2,457 are in rural areas and 180 are in urban areas. Maximum 701 polling stations are in Kathua, 654 in Udhampur, 529 in Doda. 405 in Kishtwar and 348 in Ramban.
