Belagavi (Karnataka), A couple were arrested after a 28-year-old married woman accused them of forcing her to convert to Islam by threatening to circulate her private photographs, police said on Monday.

Police said the victim also alleged that a man named Rafiq raped her several times in front of his wife when she was living with them in a rented house since 2021.

According to the police, the woman also alleged in her complaint that this month, the couple forced her to wear a burqa instead of "kumkum" and also forced her to offer namaz five times a day. The complaint states that Rafiq also threatened to circulate her intimate photographs to her family members and others if she did not divorce her husband, convert to Islam and live with him.

The victim was married in 2013 and has two children.In 2020, she met Rafiq at her husband's grocery store, which he frequented, and later befriended him. They also got involved in a physical relationship, which her husband later came to know about. This led to a fight and she left her husband's house, a senior police officer said.

She told that after a gap of about two months, she returned to her husband's house on the condition that she would end her relationship with Rafiq, but when she told this to Rafiq, he started threatening her with her personal photographs. .

The officer said the woman remained in touch with Rafiq but when her husband came to know about it, a fight broke out between them and she left her husband's house and started living with the accused and his wife.The officer said the victim had been living with the couple since 2021 and alleged that the accused raped her multiple times in front of his wife.

"Based on her complaint, we have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code 37 (rape), 503 (criminal intimidation), Karnataka Right to Religious Freedom Act, IT Act, SC and ST Act and other sections. Seven People," he said.

Belagavi Superintendent of Police Bhimashankar Guleda said a case has been registered and Rafiq and his wife have been arrested in connection with the incident.
