Bolivian police arrested General Juan José Zuniga, the rebel military commander who had led the failed coup attempt.

Bolivian President Luis Arce condemned the attempted coup and called on citizens to unite and defend democracy. He also appointed a new army commander who ordered the troops to retreat.

Earlier, under the leadership of General Zuniga, the troops marched to Plaza Murillo, a square outside the seat of government, and made their way to Palacio Quemado, the old government headquarters.

The presence of armed soldiers generated a strong reaction from citizens, who gathered in the streets around Plaza Murillo, the center of Bolivia's political power, to condemn the military move.

Representatives of social organizations in different parts of the country also joined the President's call to protect the constitutional system and demonstrated in defense of democracy.
