New Delhi: Counting of votes in states and union territories for the Lok Sabha elections started on Tuesday morning.

While the Lok Sabha has 543 members, counting is underway for 542 seats after BJP candidate Mukesh Dalal was elected unopposed from Surat.

Counting of votes is also going on for the assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, where voting was held along with the Lok Sabha elections.

Along with the Lok Sabha elections, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim assembly elections were also held. The results of these elections were declared on June 2.

As per election conduct rules, postal ballots will be counted first and the process of counting of votes recorded in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will begin after 30 minutes.

The process of counting of postal ballots and votes cast through EVMs will continue simultaneously.

Since 2019, VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) slips from five randomly selected polling stations per assembly constituency – or segment in case of Lok Sabha seats – are matched with the EVM count for greater transparency.
