Chandigarh, Haryana Minister Aseem Goel has urged Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to convince the protesting farmers to open the Shambhu border near Ambala to ease the difficulties faced by the people.

Goel, Minister of State for Transport, met Chouhan in New Delhi on Tuesday. He said the farmers started their protest at Shambhu village on the Haryana-Punjab border a few months ago, which resulted in the closure of the border since then.

This lockdown has caused difficulties for the general public, particularly traders, in carrying out their businesses, Goel, who is the BJP MLA from Ambala city, told Chouhan, according to an official statement issued here.

The Haryana minister emphasized that the central government should hold talks with the protesting farmers to convince them to open the border. The opening of the border will provide relief to local residents and facilitate business operations for traders, he said.

According to the statement, Chouhan assured Goel that the central government is taking this issue seriously and will take action soon.

Meanwhile, Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarwan Singh Pandher on Wednesday claimed that the farmers had not blocked the road, rather it was the government that stopped their 'Delhi Chalo' march in February by erecting barricades.

Samyukta Kisan Morcha (apolitical) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha are leading farmers' 'Delhi Chalo' march to pressurize the government to accept their demands, which include that the Center should give a legal guarantee for a minimum support price for crops.

The farmers remain at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13, when security forces stopped their march.

Pandher said the protest has been going on at the Shambhu border point for the last 141 days and will continue until the farmers' demands are met.

"We have heard about the statement of the Haryana Transport Minister. He said that due to the farmers' morcha (protest) in Shambhu, the road has been blocked.

"During the Haryana minister's meeting with the Union agriculture minister, he said that the Center should hold talks with farmers, which is good. But the allegation he made that the road had been blocked due to protests by farmers is totally a lie.

"The national highway had been blocked by Haryana and the central governments by erecting barricades. We request the government to open the highway," he said.
