Panaji, Incessant rains lashed Goa on Monday for the third consecutive day, flooding several low-lying areas of the coastal state.

Three people were killed in a wall collapse at the Kundaim industrial estate amid heavy rain in north Goa on Sunday, police said.

Laborers Dilip Yadav (37), Mukesh Kumar Singh (38) and Trinity Nayak (47) died after a wall collapsed on them, an official said.

Goa has been witnessing heavy rain since Saturday, and the state education department declared a holiday for all schools up to class 12 on Monday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, forecasting moderate to heavy rain with strong surface winds gusting to 40-50 km per hour, likely at many places in the northern and southern districts. from Goa.

In 24 hours till 8.30 am, Panaji recorded the highest rainfall of 360mm while Quepem received the lowest of 175mm.

Several areas of Canacona Taluka in South Goa have been flooded since Sunday night.

Residents of Avem village near the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary have claimed that the only bridge connecting them to Canacona town is in precarious condition and they will be completely isolated if it collapses.

"Water has been flowing over the bridge for the last two days and two of the pillars have given way," said Basuri Desai, a resident of the area.

"People have stopped using this bridge because it can disappear at any moment," he said.

According to locals, the situation was similar in Mayem in North Goa, where the road connecting the village to other areas is flooded.

"People are not taking any risk by going out and have chosen to stay home until the water subsides," said Mayem resident Ramakrishna Naik.

Speaking to reporters, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant appealed to people to stay indoors and avoid visiting flood-prone areas.

He said the disaster management authority is active and collectors of both districts are monitoring the situation round the clock.

According to the water resources department, the state's largest reservoir, the Selaulim Dam, reached its maximum capacity on Sunday night.
