New Delhi: According to a notice issued by the Consumer Affairs Ministry, the government has called a meeting of e-commerce players publishing online reviews for consultation on quality control order to check fake reviews.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has also released a draft of the Online Consumption Reviews (Quality Control) Order, 2024 (QCO), which proposes to accept reviews from verified buyers and users of the product.

"This QCO obliges all e-commerce aggregators and organizations engaged in publishing online reviews to declare self-compliance with the mandatory requirement set out in the order...

The draft QCO states that organizations will not publish reviews that are purchased and written by themselves or by a supplier, vendor or a third party employed to write reviews.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has proposed that all organizations managing the publication of online consumer reviews shall comply with the necessary requirements including prohibition of publication of fake reviews and declare to BIS their self-compliance to the essential requirement prescribed in this order. The proposed QCO prohibits platforms from rewarding consumers based on content edited reviews, publishing negative reviews, and accepting reviews from individuals who have not used or experienced the good or service.
