New York, Thousands of yoga enthusiasts and practitioners gathered here in the iconic Times Square for day-long sessions of this ancient Indian practice on the eve of the commemoration of International Yoga Day.

The Consulate General of India in New York, along with the Times Square Alliance, organized special yoga sessions in Times Square on Thursday, the day of the summer solstice, as yoga enthusiasts prepared to celebrate International Yoga Day, which It is celebrated every year on June 21.

Amid heat warnings in effect for the New York area, which experienced temperatures as high as 93°F (33.8°C) during the day, people from all walks of life and nationalities arrived early in the morning and rolled out their mats yoga in the heart of the popular destination of New York City.

Yoga instructor and breathing meditation teacher Richa Dhekne, who has more than two decades of experience as a volunteer and faculty member of the Art of Living Foundation, led the yoga and meditation session organized by the Consulate General of the India in New York.

Several other yoga teachers and experts led various meditation, exercise and breathing sessions throughout the day in Times Square, while thousands of people participated in the day-long activities.

"As you can see, we have yoga participants of various nationalities, and this will continue throughout the day today," said India's Consul General in New York, Binaya Srikanta Pradhan.

Pradhan said they were expecting between 8,000 and 10,000 participants, adding that the theme of Yoga Day 2024 is 'Yoga for Self and Society'.

"I'm sure this will inspire everyone participating today here and elsewhere in the United States," Pradhan said.

The Consulate said in a post on X "celebrated the 10th International Yoga Day at the iconic @TimesSquareNYC!"

"The day-long Solstice celebration at @TimesSquareNYC featured seven yoga sessions, involving some 10,000 people of all nationalities, demonstrating the widespread enthusiasm for yoga in the city," she added.

Pradhan greeted the participants, highlighting the benefits of Yoga for both physical health and spiritual well-being, as well as its role in promoting harmony with nature, the Consulate in X reported.

Indian Consulate officials and staff as well as members of the diaspora joined the yoga session.
