Amethi (UP), Congress' Amethi candidate Kishori Lal Sharma on Friday said he would like to fight Gandhi from the seat, but he cannot refuse the party's order asking him to contest the election.

Sharma, a close aide of the Gandhi family, has been fielded by the Congress from the Amethi Lok Sabha seat - which was the Gandhi family's old bastion in 2019.

"Even today I want the Gandhi family to contest from Amethi. But it is my duty to accept the order given by the family," Sharma said at the Gauriganj Congress office here.

He said, "I have always been a 'servant' of the Gandhi family and whatever responsibility the Gandhi family has entrusted to its servant, I will fulfill it."

After days of suspense, the Congress on Friday named Sharma, the representative of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and before him Rajiv Gandhi, as its candidate from the Amethi seat.

Sharma is scheduled to go to the Collectorate today and file his nomination papers before District Election Officer Nisha Anant.

The BJP has fielded the sitting MP from the seat, Union minister Smriti Irani, who ended Rahul Gandhi's three-term streak in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, defeating him by over 55,000 votes.
