New Delhi: The Congress on Monday began consultations to define its strategy for the Jharkhand Assembly elections due later this year and develop ways to strengthen the organisation.

Similar sessions will also be held this week for the states of Maharashtra and Haryana, besides Jammu and Kashmir, where elections will be held.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi began deliberations with Jharkhand leaders during the strategy meeting. All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal was also present.

“The Congress Party is fully dedicated to ensuring the rights of all sections of Jharkhand, including the rights to water, forests, land and tribal society.

"By playing conspiratorial politics, the BJP has insulted the identity of Jharkhand. Every Congress worker has to remain in the public for the upcoming Assembly elections," Kharge said in a Hindi post on X.

"We are all committed to social justice and participation. Today we discussed election strategy with Jharkhand Congress leaders," he added while sharing pictures of the meeting on the microblogging platform.

Jharkhand Congress chief Rajesh Thakur, state Congress in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir and other senior party leaders like Ajoy Kumar attended the meeting.

Congress' strategy meeting for Maharashtra would be held on Tuesday and party leaders from Haryana would meet on Wednesday. For Jammu and Kashmir, where elections are yet to be declared, the strategic meeting would be held on Thursday.

Congress leaders have planned the meetings well in advance after being encouraged by the party's performance in the recently held Lok Sabha polls.

Assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand are scheduled for later this year.

The term of the Maharashtra Assembly ends on November 26, while that of the Haryana Assembly ends on November 3. The term of the Jharkhand Assembly ends on January 5, 2025.

The Supreme Court has said that elections in Jammu and Kashmir should be held before September 30.
