Raipur: Opposition Congress protested across Chhattisgarh on Monday, alleging increase in electricity rates and frequent power cuts in the state.

Chhattisgarh State Electricity Regulatory Commission (CSERC) has increased electricity tariffs for all categories of consumers in the state by 8.35 percent from the existing rate.

The new tariffs have become effective from June 1.

Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Congress state unit chief Deepak Baij took part in the protest in Raipur.

A party official here said that other party leaders protested in the district headquarters and development blocks.

Here, Congress leaders and workers marched with lanterns at Rajiv Chowk.

Taking aim at the ruling BJP, Baghel said domestic consumers, farmers, industrialists and traders were bearing the brunt of increased electricity rates and power cuts.

"Coal is being supplied to half of the country from Chhattisgarh. The state, which supplies energy (coal for power plants) to the rest of the country, is itself facing disruption in power supply," he told reporters. "

Baghel further claimed that electricity rates in Chhattisgarh are higher than its neighboring states.

Speaking to reporters, Baij said that the previous Congress government had provided electricity at cheaper rates, but the BJP increased the electricity rates as soon as it came to power.
