Srinivas, 76, who led the Congress and served as a minister in the undivided state of Andhra Pradesh, breathed his last at his residence around 3am, family sources said.

The senior leader has not maintained good health in recent years after suffering a stroke.

Popularly known as DS, he is survived by his wife and two children. His younger son Dharampuri Arvind is a BJP MP from Nizamabad, while his elder son Dharampuri Sanjay served as mayor of Nizamabad.

Srinivas led the Congress in the undivided state of Andhra Pradesh when he returned to power in 2004.

He twice headed the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee and also served as a Minister in Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy's Cabinet.

Srinivas had switched his allegiance to Talangana Rashtra Samithi (now Bharat Rashtra Samithi) after it formed the first government in the newly created state of Telangana in 2014. He was rewarded with the post of special advisor to the government and later appointed as a member of Rajya Sabha . in 2016.

However, on the eve of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the senior Nizamabad leader faced allegations of anti-party activities.

It was alleged that he promoted his son Arvind, who joined the BJP. Since then, Srinivas stayed away from active politics.

On March 26, 2023, Srinivas and his son Sanjay rejoined the Congress.

He reached the party office on a wheelchair and joined the party in the presence of then Telangana Congress chief Manikrao Thakare and state Congress chief A. Revanth Reddy.

The next day, a statement was issued in Srinivas's name denying that he had joined the Congress. It was claimed that he simply accompanied his son to the congressional office.

Srinivas joined the Congress in 1989 and was elected to the Assembly from Nizamabad urban constituency the same year and became a minister. He was again elected MLA in 1999 and 2004.

He served as Minister of Rural Development, Information and Public Relations from 1989 to 1994 and Minister of Higher Education and Urban Housing from 2004 to 2008.

He led the Congress when he came to power in 2004 and again in 2009, when he retained power. However, he suffered a defeat in his Assembly constituency in 2009.

Srinivas also served as a member of the Legislative Council between 2013 and 2015.
