In New Delhi [India], Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar supported the decision to appoint senior MP Bhartruhari Mahtab as interim president amid Congress demands to appoint K Suresh and said the Congress had imposed the Emergency and should not talk about conventions.

Majumdar said, "The opposition has more seats this time. Therefore, they are raising their voice on every issue. Bhartruhari Mahtab is a senior MP. He is consecutively elected MP for the seventh time. They demand that K Suresh be appointed as president interim has been elected for the eighth time, but his term of service is not consecutive."

Furthermore, he lashed out at the Congress, saying that the party has no right to talk about conventions as they have also violated them many times.

He further said, "Congress has violated conventions many times. Those who imposed emergency should not talk about conventions."

He also congratulated the newly elected MPs and said it would be a historic occasion for the first-time elected MPs who will enter the new Parliament building.

Bhartruhari Mahtab was sworn in as acting speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha on Monday. The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The oath-taking ceremony marked the beginning of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha, which will begin with the swearing-in of new parliamentarians.

Amid the row over the appointment of Bhartruhari Mahtab as interim president, INDIA bloc leaders on Monday staged a protest holding copies of the Constitution inside the Parliament premises in the national capital.

Congress Parliamentary Party president Sonia Gandhi, party leader Rahul Gandhi and party chief Mallikarjun Kharge participated in the protest.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said: "The ruling party has not forgotten its haughtiness...we can see that they are ignoring the key issues of the country...the entire Dalit community in India could witness a historic scene if K Suresh was appointed as interim president... today, the BJP has not only neglected the Congress, the INDIA alliance and K Suresh, but the entire Dalit community..."
