Mumbai: The Congress on Thursday named its Mumbai unit president Varsha Gaikwa as the party candidate for the Mumbai North-Central Lok Sabha seat.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) announced this in a statement.

As per the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) seat-sharing agreement, the Congress will contest from two Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai this time. The second seat which has gone to Congress's account is Mumbai North.

Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) will contest from four other Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai.

Voting will take place in Mumbai on 20th May.

Currently, the Mumbai North-Central seat is represented by Poonam Mahajan of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Gaikwad, a former Maharashtra minister, is a four-time MLA from Mumbai's Dharavi assembly constituency, which he currently represents. He has expressed interest in contesting from the Mumbai South-Central seat, which was earlier held by his late father Eknath Gaikwad.
