AAP state president and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann formally inducted all the leaders into the party in the presence of AAP candidate Mohinder Bhagat and welcomed them into the party.

Many local leaders of Jalandhar, including Jalandhar Municipal Corporation councilor Rajeev Omkar Tikka and Darshan Bhagat, joined AAP.

In a statement, Chief Minister Mann said that Aam Aadmi Party is the first choice of the people of Jalandhar (West). He said that this time the people here will answer the traitors and will get their bail confiscated. All the leaders who joined the party thanked the Chief Minister and said that they will work selflessly for the party. He promised that he will work with full dedication to make Bhagat win in this election.

Both AAP and BJP have fielded turncoat candidates for the by-elections.

While the ruling party declared BJP rebel Bhagat as its candidate, the BJP declared former AAP MLA Sheetal Angural as its candidate.

Bhagat, who left BJP and joined AAP in April 2023, is the son of former minister Chunni Lal Bhagat.

The by-election will be held on July 10 and the counting of votes will take place on July 13.

The by-election became necessary after Angural's resignation.

Bhagat had contested the elections from Jalandhar West seat in 2017 but lost. By fielding him, AAP is trying to woo the 30,000 Bhagat community voters. Angural, who joined BJP on March 27 before the Lok Sabha elections, defeated the then Congress candidate Sushil Kumar Rinku by 4,253 votes.
