New Delhi: A 22-year-old woman slit the throat of her nine-day-old newborn baby at her home in outer Delhi's Mundka area because she did not want it to happen, police said on Saturday.

The matter came to light on Thursday when a man named Govinda reached the local police station and reported that his wife had slit the throat of their daughter.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Jimmy Chiram said a team was sent to the couple's house in Baba Haridas Colony in Tikri, Mundka.

The team found the infant dead in a room on the second floor and his mother in another room.

"During sustained interrogation the woman revealed that she did not want to have a daughter and hence she killed her," Chiram said in a statement.

The police recovered the knife used in the crime and registered a case against the woman under section 103(1) of the BNS, the officer said. He was arrested and sent to judicial custody.

Chiram said, the woman's husband works as a laborer in a shoe factory in Bahadurgarh, Haryana. The couple has a two-year-old son.

According to the police, the husband came to Delhi in 2019 with his brother and mother who live with them.
