CHENNAI: The Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), the premier defense research institute under the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), located at Avadi here, celebrated its golden jubilee on Thursday.

Sameer V Kamat, Chairman, DRDO and Secretary, Department of Defense Research and Development, who was the chief guest at the event, called for greater focus on innovations and taking steps to adapt to the emerging scenario in the defense sector.

He also appreciated the efforts of CVRDE in achieving self-reliance in AFV (Armoured Fighting Vehicles) categories.

CVRDE has played a key role in making India, once a net importer of battle tanks, a manufacturer of the world's most lethal and advanced war machine – the Main Battle Tank (MBT) Arjun. Its sustained efforts have made the country self-reliant in AFV technology, a release said.Those attending the Golden Jubilee event included Directors of Armament and Combat Engineering from DRDO Headquarters/Laboratories, Army, Navy, Central and State Government officials and industry partners.

A panel discussion on the topic 'Tank Warfare in the 21st Century – Operational and Technical Requirements' was held during the afternoon session, in which experts shared their views on facing the future challenges.

"Not relying on past achievements, the motivated team at CVRDE has continuously improved the MBT Arjun Mk-1A to make it at par or superior to other contemporary MBTs in the world," the release said.

Before these, several combat equipment developed by the CVRDE were inducted into service, including armored patrol cars, 130 mm catapults, bridge layer tanks and BMPs (Infantry Combat Vehicles).
