Chennai, Indian Coast Guard, Eastern Region on Wednesday received two state-of-the-art Dornier 228 aircraft equipped with latest avionics that boost maritime surveillance.

The aircraft, which arrived here today, were upgraded with latest equipment at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Transport Aircraft Division, Kanpur.

The latest range of aircraft includes five-bladed propeller, glass cockpit with 12.7 mm AV gun and satellite communication system.

On arrival both aircraft received a traditional water cannon salute.

This will significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the aircraft, enabling it to perform critical roles including maritime zone patrol, coastal surveillance search and rescue in a more efficient manner, an official release said.

This is a testament to the Coast Guard's commitment towards the Swadeshi Unnayan Kendra's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' campaign.



The Coast Guard Air Station at Chennai maintains a fleet of aircraft and helicopters for uninterrupted surveillance along the Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.
