New Delhi: Thermal power plants (TPPs) had coal stocks of over 45 million tonnes as on June 16, 32 per cent more than the same day last year, an official statement said on Wednesday.

The Coal Ministry said it is working round the clock to ensure continuous supply of coal to the TPP.

The ministry statement said that as a result of increased production, efficient management of logistics and smooth inter-agency coordination, the highest ever coal stock has been recorded at TPP.

“The highest ever coal stock available at thermal power plants is the highest ever. Despite extremely high demand for power, coal stock at thermal power plants remains strong, standing at over 45 MT till June 16, 2024, higher than the previous corresponding level. This is 31.71 per cent higher than the previous period." year when it was 34.25 MT," it said.

As on June 16, cumulative coal production was 207.48 MT, showing an increase of 9.27 per cent over the same period last year.

Coal production from captive and commercial mines increased by 27 per cent to 33 MT.

Cumulative coal dispatch as on June 16, 2024 was 220.31 MT, registering a growth of 7.65 per cent year-on-year.

Coal India Limited (CIL) recorded a growth of 7.28 per cent in coal production during the period under review, which stood at 160.25 MT. It recorded a 4 percent growth in dispatches to 166.58 MT.

Coal dispatch from captive and commercial mines increased by 30 per cent to 39.45 MT. Dispatch in the power sector was 180.35 MT, up 5.71 per cent.

The total reserves of coal in the country (mines, transit, power plants) is more than 144.68 MT, which ensures adequate coal supply to the power sector.
