Bengaluru, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's economic advisor Basavaraj Rayareddi has said that huge allocations to the state government's five assurances have made it difficult to get funds for development works.

The Congress MLA from Yelburga in Koppal district spoke at a farmers' meeting after starting work on a lake in Mangaluru village in his Assembly segment.

"The Chief Minister has appointed me as his economic advisor and as I interact with him daily, this money has come (for the lake project), otherwise it would not have come...impossible. This is the only job that is happening across the state, because guarantees alone will finish things... We have to spend Rs 60,000-65,000 crore (guarantees). I know how difficult internal financing is," Rayareddi said.

Opposition BJP and JD(S) accuse the Congress government in the state of not taking up any development work due to huge expenditure to fulfill the assurances promised by the party during the Assembly elections.

Reacting to Rayareddi's claims, Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress President DK Shivakumar said, "There are no difficulties, we are simplifying. We have fulfilled our promises. We will continue with the assurance plans..."

"...we did not introduce vote guarantee schemes, it was with the intention of improving the quality of life of the people, who were suffering from rising prices. We trust that people will cooperate with us," Shivakumar said.

Siddaramaiah has set aside Rs 52,009 crore for the government's five flagship guarantee schemes in the current financial year.

The five guarantee schemes are: 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti), monthly assistance of Rs 2,000 to the woman head of the family (Gruha Lakshmi), cash payment in lieu of the additional 5 kg of rice to every member. from a BPL household (Anna Bhagya), Rs 3,000 per month for unemployed young graduates and Rs 1,500 for diploma holders for two years (YuvaNidhi), and free travel for women in public transport buses (Shakti).
