Airport officials and federal police said the airport was initially closed for security reasons.

After about two hours, one of the two runways was reopened, followed by the other runway about an hour later.

The Last Generation reported on social media platform X that six people sat in groups of two at different locations at Munich Airport.

Several police officers and fire brigade personnel were present at the spot to remove the workers.

A Federal Police spokesman said eight people initially tried to break through the airport's security fence and enter the site at four different points at the same time.

An airport spokesperson said it may take some time for air traffic to return to normal on Saturday.

"We have planned for a total of less than 1,000 take-offs and landings."

Due to tight coordination of flights, there may still be delays for some time. Passengers who have booked flights on Saturday should contact their airlines as a precaution.

The activists said they wanted to disrupt the start of the Whitsun holiday weekend. In many countries, including Germany, the holiday occurs the day after Pentecost Sunday, or Whitsun, which is celebrated 50 days after Easter.

The group had taken similar actions at several German airports in the past. Air traffic contributes about 10 percent of Germany's responsibility for global warming.
