NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Friday said yoga is a combination of physical exercise and spirituality and the International Yoga Day underlines its importance in maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

The CJI, other judges and staff of the Supreme Court performed various 'asanas' during a special yoga session organized at the apex court complex on the 10th International Yoga Day, an official press release said.

Speaking in Hindi, Justice Chandrachud said it was a day of celebration.

The CJI underlined the importance of the four S's in Yoga - 'Siddhanta' or principles that underpin the discipline of Yoga such as the discipline of law, 'Samanvaya' (coordination), 'Sadbhavana' (brotherhood and compassion) and 'Empowerment', Which is a movement from individual to society, from society to nation and from nation to global humanity.

Justice Chandrachud also spoke about his experiences of being a vegetarian, the concept of which is based on the principle of showing equal respect for every living being.

On this day, a special cleaning campaign was also conducted in the apex court premises.

Advocate Tejashwi Kumar Sharma, a specially-abled person and three-time international champion in yoga asanas, demonstrated the yoga asanas brilliantly.

A team of doctors and paramedical staff from the All India Institute of Ayurveda performed a yoga fusion dance combining rhythmic movements in yoga asanas with music, the statement said.

International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on 21 June to create awareness about its immense potential in improving overall health and well-being.
