Colombo [Sri Lanka], Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Thursday announced the resignation of Chris Silverwood from the position of head coach of national teams at various levels, citing personal reasons.

The ongoing T20 World Cup was bad for Sri Lanka as they failed to reach the Super Eight. They lost to South Africa and Bangladesh in the group stage and could only register one win against the Netherlands. Their match against Nepal was canceled due to rain. With just three points, Lanka finished in third place in Group D.

"Being an international coach means long periods away from my loved ones. After long conversations with my family and with a heavy heart, I feel the time has come to come home and spend some quality time together," Silverwood said as reported by SLC in X.

Earlier in the day, the Cricket Board also announced the resignation of former batsman and captain Mahela Jayawardene from the position of consulting coach to the national teams at various levels following a disappointing ICC T20 World Cup campaign in the West Indies and United States. Joined.

SLC issued a statement on Wednesday announcing Jayawardene's resignation.

"Sri Lanka Cricket would like to announce that Mahela Jayawardena, who served as 'Consulting Coach' of the SLC, has tendered her resignation with immediate effect. Jayawardena, during her tenure, helped implement significant changes to the structure of the national team ecosystem and Training Centre. High Performance," the statement reads.

"Sri Lanka Cricket takes this opportunity to wish Mahela all the best in his future endeavors and thank him for the services he rendered during his tenure," the statement concluded.

Since his appointment to the position in 2022, Jayawardene has witnessed mixed results. After securing the Asia Cup title in 2022, Sri Lanka performed poorly in the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup and the 2023 50-over World Cup in Australia and India respectively. While Lanka qualified for the Super 12 in the 2022 T20 Cup, they finished fourth in their group. In the 2023 50-over World Cup, Lanka finished ninth with two wins and seven losses, failing to secure qualification for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy to be held in Pakistan. During his tenure, he also worked with the U19 and Sri Lanka 'A' teams.

During his playing days, Jayawardene played 652 international matches for SL, scoring 25,957 runs at an average of 39.15, with 54 centuries and 136 fifties. He is considered one of the greatest batsmen of all time and the backbone of Sri Lanka's famous batting from the 2000s to 2010s, along with Kumar Sangakkara.

He won the 2002 Champions Trophy and the 2014 T20 World Cup with Sri Lanka as a player and finished as runners-up in the 2007 and 2011 50-over World Cups to Australia and India.
