Those who are under observation and the positive case have been reported from an orphanage located in the suburbs of the capital city near Neyyattinkara.

Last week a prisoner died of dysentery. When other prisoners developed similar symptoms, health officials swung into action and tests were conducted.

A 10-year-old boy has been diagnosed with cholera and is undergoing treatment, as are others with similar symptoms.

A woman official associated with the orphanage said that they do not get any food from outside.

"Health officials have tested the water we use and there is no problem with it. So, we are concerned about the source. We also keep the place clean," the woman officer said.

A death due to cholera was last reported in the state in 2017.

State health officials are on high alert in the Capital District.
