Madurai: Thousands of devotees participated in the car festival here on Monday, the 11th day of the popular annual Chithirai festival.

With devotees raising spiritual slogans, the chariots of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareshwar (Lord Shiva) were taken out through the streets of Masi as per tradition and taken back to the temple complex.

A highlight of the annual Chirathirai festival, Lord Kallazhagar (entry of Lord Vishnu into the Vaigai River) is scheduled to be held on the morning of 23 April.

On Sunday, the 10th day of the 13-day long annual festival, the divine marriage of Lord Sundareshwar and Goddess Meenakshi was held amid much fanfare. As per custom, the women attending the event replaced their thali (mangalsutra) with a new one.

One of the hallmarks of this ancient southern city of Tamil Nadu, the Chithirai festival began on April 12 with the traditional flag hoisting in the premises of the Meenakshi temple.

Chithirai refers to the Tamil month of the same name and annual events are held in many temples in the state during this month.
