New Delhi: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Thursday condoled the demise of CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury and said it was a "brutal blow" to the forces engaged in protecting democracy, freedom, equality, workers and human rights. " Is.

Yechury, a pragmatic communist and one of the key architects of coalition politics since the mid-90s, died in a Delhi hospital on Thursday after battling a lung infection.

Yechury, 72, was in a critical condition and on respiratory support for the past few days while being treated for acute respiratory tract infection in the ICU of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He was admitted to the hospital on 19 August.

In a statement, Chidambaram said Yechury's demise was "a cruel blow to the forces who are engaged in a determined fight in defense of democracy, freedom, equality, workers' rights and human rights".

“I know that since 1996, Comrade Yechury stood with the progressive forces of the country.
