Baloda Bazar-Bhatapara (Chhattisgarh) [India], The Chhattisgarh government has appointed a new District Collector and Superintendent of Police (SP) in Baloda Bazar district, which had recently witnessed incidents of violent protests.

The transfer orders were issued late Tuesday night. IAS officer Deepak Soni has been appointed the new District Collector of Baloda Bazar, while Vijay Aggarwal is the new Superintendent of Police.

On Tuesday night, outgoing District Magistrate KL Chauhan and Superintendent of Police Sadanand Kumar were transferred to other departments.

Soni has been transferred as additional in-charge commissioner in the MNREGA department, while Chauhan has been transferred as special secretary for administration in the home ministry.

A protest by the Satnami community at the collector's office in Balodabazar over alleged damage to a religious place of the Satnami community turned violent, following which several policemen were injured.Police said incidents of stone pelting and arson took place during the violence, with government offices vandalized and vehicles set on fire.

Visuals from the scene show a large crowd defying water cannons and attempting to break police barricades.

Sadanand Kumar said that the protesters have given assurance in writing that they will protest peacefully. He said that barricades were installed at four places, but the protesters arrived from another route and broke the barricades.

“They manhandled the policemen and pelted stones… Many of our policemen were injured. Our officers were also injured… They also entered the Collectorate premises while pelting stones, they set vehicles on fire here.They also vandalized the premises. The fire was brought under control. Incidents of violence were also reported in the city. Those too were brought under control. Now the situation is under control… Strict action will be taken… We have pictures and videos… We will take action on that basis,” he said.

The mob set a large number of vehicles on fire and also damaged fire fighting vehicles, police said, adding that some vehicles parked near the collector's office were also damaged.
