Dantewada: A former Janpad Panchayat member was allegedly killed with sharp weapons by unidentified assailants in a village in Naxal-affected Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh. Police gave this information on Saturday.

He said that investigation is going on on all possible aspects including personal rivalry.

The incident took place in Potali village under Aranpur police station limits when the victim, identified as Joga Podiyam, a former member of the local Janpad Panchayat, was at his home with his family, a police officer said.

About 8-10 people dressed as common people entered Podium's house and dragged him out onto the road. They then attacked him with sharp weapons in front of his family members, killing him on the spot, he said.

He told that after committing the crime the attackers fled into the forest.

He said that as soon as information about this was received, a team of security personnel from the Chhattisgarh Armed Forces (CAF) camp located about 500 meters away from the village reached the spot.

No Maoist pamphlet was found at the spot. However, the murder is being investigated on all possible aspects including Naxalite action and personal enmity.

He said that a search operation is being conducted in the area to trace the attackers.

According to locals, Naxalites had threatened Podium of dire consequences in 2018 and asked him not to support development work in the area.

It is said that ten years ago, Podiyam's son was also murdered by Naxalites by setting them on fire.
