A total of 26 Naxalites, including five women and three teenagers, surrendered on Monday in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada, which is part of Bastar Lok Sabha seat, which will go to polls on April 19, a senior police officer said.

Dantewada Superintendent of Police Gaurav Rai said that among them, Joga Muchaki was the head of 'Korajguda Panchayat Janata Sarkar' of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) and he had a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head.

"They laid down their arms before the police and CRPF officials. They were part of the Kistaram, Bhairamgarh, Malangir and Katekalyan area committees of the Maoists in South Bastar. They said they were impressed by the police's rehabilitation operation 'Lone Varatu' and were disappointed by it Hollow Maoist ideology,” Rai said.

The SP said, "These cadres were assigned the task of digging roads, cutting trees to block roads and putting up posters and banners during the bandh called by Naxalites. They will be provided facilities as per the surrender and rehabilitation policy of the government "

According to the police, the 26 people include five women, two girls and a boy, all three of whom are 17 years of age.

The official said that with this, under the police's 'Lo Varatu' (return to their home/village) campaign launched in June 2020, so far 717 Naxalites have joined the mainstream in the district, out of which 176 Naxalites have been arrested. Cash prize is included.
