New Delhi [India], World Environment Day was celebrated at Chhatbir Zoo on Wednesday and the public awareness campaign concluded with a tree plantation drive in which the Field Director along with all the zoo officials and visitors planted trees inside the zoo.

Since World Environment Day is celebrated across the world as the biggest international day for the environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and held annually since 1973, the event has become the largest global forum for environmental outreach. It is celebrated by millions of people across the world.

Indian culture and living traditions are inherently enduring.Ancient Indian texts emphasize the importance of conserving precious natural resources and living in harmony with nature. The need of the hour is to take advantage of that ancient knowledge and spread the message to as many people as possible. The zoo awareness campaign attempted to mobilize the efforts of individuals and communities into a global mass movement of positive behavior change.

MOEFCC (Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India) and Central Zoo Authority, Government of India also directed all the zoos in the country to celebrate it with all the stakeholders and spread the message for the environment. World Environment Day 2024 with a focus on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience.Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Ecosystem Restoration Decade (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and restoration of ecosystems around the world, which is critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Chhatbir Zoo organized awareness programs and conducted public awareness campaigns inside the zoo for the visitors. Area Director Shri Neeraj Kumar started the tree plantation campaign. He invited the visitors to plant saplings. The visitors participated in the tree plantation drive with full enthusiasm.Mr. Neeraj Kumar Field Director said, "This is our movement. There has never been a more urgent need to revive the damaged ecosystem than now."

Harpal Singh P.R. Wildlife cum Zoo Education Officer said that it will be successful only when everyone plays a role in it and a total of more than 577 persons have been motivated, and sensitized towards the environment and they have happily contributed towards the environment.
