New Delhi [India], Charity Bird Hospital in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, is stepping up its efforts to care for birds affected by the rising heat. As the temperature rises in Delhi, the hospital is seeing an increase in the number of birds suffering from heat. -related diseases
Dr. Haravtar Singh, Senior Consultant, Charity Bird Hospital, emphasizes the urgency of the situation, "The temperature in Delhi has started rising rapidly. As the heatwave intensifies, the number of birds suffering from heatstroke will also increase, resulting in more sick people. As a result, the number of bird cases will increase, with many cases where birds are not able to survive due to the severity of the heat,” Singh said.
Dr Singh said that during heatwaves or 'luh', he usually finds around 5 to 15 birds every day. However, with the recent increase in temperatures, this number may increase significantly. Currently, 4 in 30 birds are suffering from various diseases in the hospital, which are not solely related to the heatwave. One of the main reasons birds suffer during heatwaves is lack of access to proper shelter and clean water. “Birds often get sick because they don't find proper shelter or access to clean water. As the temperature rises, the water also becomes hot, preventing it from drinking.'' Lack of hydration makes their condition worse. When a bird suffering from heatstroke arrives at the hospital, the bird's condition can be stabilized. Immediate action is taken to do so. “When we find a bird suffering from heatstroke, we sprinkle water on it and provide adequate ventilation. We have big fans that continuously sprinkle water on the birds through the cages and ensure air flow around their bodies. help calm down," Singh said.
Birds have a naturally high body temperature, starting at around 107°F, but during heat waves, their body temperatures can rise much higher. Dr Singh noted that if a bird's body temperature goes above 110 degrees Fahrenheit, it becomes serious, requiring immediate and intensive care, as Delhi continues to grapple with heat waves. The charity Bird Hospital's efforts highlight the impact of extreme weather on the city's wildlife and the importance of providing them with the care and support they need to survive.Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department said on Sunday that the temperature in Delhi is likely to remain around 38 degrees Celsius in the coming 2-3 days.
