Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday alleged that private power company CESC has increased the rates without informing her government.

However, officials of CESC, which supplies power to Kolkata and Howrah, claimed that there was no change in the tariff but the fuel cost was adjusted in June.

"I have heard that they (CESC) have increased the rates, but I have no information about the increase. The electricity department also has no information about it," he said.

Stating that prices of essential commodities were already high, he said the CESC should have talked to the state government regarding the rate hike.

“We are hopeful that this much will be done,” the Chief Minister said.

CESC officials said fuel adjustments for April led to a 5.7 percent increase in June bills.

Officials claimed it was a set regulation for utilities to adjust fuel costs.

He said the gross average tariff stands at Rs 7.73 per unit.
