Home Minister Shah announced this on social media platform X and also shared a gazette notification.

"The Government of India has declared 25th June as Constitution Killing Day to pay tribute to all those who faced and fought against the gross abuse of power during the Emergency and to remind the people of India of any such gross abuse of power. Committed not to support the same in future,” read the notification.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the move, saying it would be "reminiscent of when India's Constitution was trampled".

"Observing June 25 as Constitution Murder Day will be a reminder of what happened when the Constitution of India was crushed. It is also a day to pay tribute to every person who suffered because of the excesses of the Emergency." Congress started a dark period in Indian history,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.

Notably, on June 25, 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, in a brazen display of dictatorship, destroyed democracy and imposed national emergency.

Over a period of about two years, lakhs of people were put behind bars and the voice of the media was suppressed.

The Home Minister said that 'Samvidhan Murder Day' will remember the immense contribution of all those who endured the inhuman pain of the Emergency of 1975.

He said, "Celebrating 'Constitution Murder Day' will help keep alive in every Indian the eternal flame of individual liberty and defense of our democracy. Thus, dictatorial forces like Congress will be prevented from repeating those horrors."
