New Delhi [India]: Devotees thronged mosques and many religious places across the country on Monday to offer prayers on the auspicious occasion of the holy festival of Eid al-Adha.

Hundreds of worshipers gathered at Delhi's historic Jama Masjid for morning prayers.

Reflecting on the significance of the festival, Maqsood Ahmed, a devotee, said that it symbolizes renouncing evils.

“This day reminds us of sacrifice. Sacrifice is not just about sacrificing an animal; in short, it means sacrificing one's evils for oneself.On this day, one should give up all the bad qualities within oneself and bring out the good ones,” Ahmed said.

He said, "All Muslims offering namaz today will remember the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim by sacrificing an animal. This eliminates our evils and increases our virtues."

Abdul Rehman, another devotee, expressed happiness at attending prayers at Jama Masjid for the first time.

“Today for the first time we offered Eid prayers in a mosque in Delhi and we felt very happy.We had never seen such a big crowd before. Seeing all these people together offering Eid prayers made us feel very happy,” Rehman said.

After offering namaz in Jama Masjid, children congratulated each other on the festival.

A girl named Alishba said, “We came here with great enthusiasm to offer namaz at Jama Masjid.We offered namaz with our uncle and father and now we will go home and offer sacrifice.”

Meanwhile, people also offered namaz at Fatehpuri Mosque in the national capital on the occasion of today's festival.

Equally vibrant celebrations were witnessed in other parts of the country.

In Srinagar, devotees gathered at a government girls higher secondary school in Sonawar to offer prayers.

Sharing his sentiments, a devotee said that he prayed for the happiness and peace of people across the country on Eid ul Adha.Talking about the tradition, he said, 'Today is a very happy occasion and on this occasion we also sacrifice an animal, which we divide into three parts: one part we keep for ourselves, one part for relatives. And we keep one part for ourselves. A share for the poor.”

"I have prayed that everyone should be happy, and I have prayed for everyone. We have prayed for the happiness of the whole of India, our country and the whole world. There should be peace everywhere, and if there is any hatred in anyone's heart , It should be removed this Eid,” said the devotee.In Uttar Pradesh, devotees gathered at Mubarak Khan Shaheed Mazar in Gorakhpur and Jama Masjid in Noida.

Meanwhile, a large crowd of worshipers was seen at the Makhdoom Ali Mahimi Mosque in Mumbai's Mahim. Hearty celebrations were also witnessed at various places including Idgah Mosque in Bhopal, Islamia Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Coimbatore and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

A crowd of devotees gathered at the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer in Rajasthan. Chandrasekaran Nair Stadium in Trivandrum, Kerala became a place of collective prayer and contemplation.

People also gathered at Chandrasekaran Nair Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram to offer Eid prayers.Eid al-Adha is a holy occasion and is celebrated on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijja, the 12th month of the Islamic or lunar calendar. It marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

This festival is an occasion of happiness and peace, where people celebrate with their families, resolve old grievances and build meaningful relationships with each other. It is celebrated to commemorate Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice everything for God.
