New Delhi: The number of students scoring more than 90 per cent and 95 per cent marks in the CBSE Class 12 exams, the results of which were declared on Monday, increased by over 1,400 and 4,000 respectively compared to last year.

The passing percentage also saw a slight increase, rising to 87.98 percent from 87.33 percent last year.

Girls recorded a higher pass rate by 6.40 percentage points, outperforming boys.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that there will be no merit list to "avoid unhealthy competition".

The board has also decided to do away with awarding first, second and third categories on the basis of marks, officials said."As per the earlier decision of the Board to avoid unhealthy competition among the students, CBSE has not published the merit list. However, the Board will issue merit certificates to 0.1 per cent of the students securing the highest marks in various subjects." CBSE Examination Controller Sanya Bhardwaj said.

At least 1.16 lakh students have scored above 90 per cent and 24,068 have scored above 9 per cent. Last year, 1.12 lakh students had scored more than 90 percent and 22,62 students had scored more than 95 percent.Of the students who scored more than 90 per cent marks, 262 are from the Children with Special Needs (CSWN) category. Forty-three students from the CSWN category have scored more than 95 percent marks.

This time more than 16.21 lakh students had appeared in the class 12th examination.

Trivandrum region recorded the highest passing percentage of 99.91, while Prayagraj region recorded the lowest of 78.25 percent.

More than 1.22 lakh students have been placed in the compartment category as against 1.25 lakh last year.In CBSE affiliated schools abroad, 95.84 percent students have passed the Class 12 examination.

Schools under the Central Tibetan School Administration achieved the highest passing percentage at 99.23, followed by Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at 98.90 per cent and Kendriya Vidyalaya at 98.81 per cent.

Government-aided and government schools achieved a pass percentage of 91.42 and 88.23 respectively.

The passing percentage of private schools has been 87.70.
