New Delhi: The CBI on Friday registered an FIR in connection with four lakh fake students found in Haryana government schools in 2016, officials said.

Officials said the case was handed over to the CBI on November 2, 2019, on the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The CBI had approached the Supreme Court claiming that the investigation may require huge manpower and the investigation should be handed over to the state police.

The apex court recently dismissed the petition following which the CBI filed the FIR.

The high court was informed in 2016 that verification of data showed that there were 22 lakh students in various classes in government schools, but in reality only 18 lakh students were found and four lakh were fake admissions.

The court was also told that students coming from backward or poor sections of the society are being given certain benefits to encourage them to go to schools and under the Mid Day Meal Scheme.

The High Court had ordered the state vigilance to appoint a senior officer to investigate the suspected misappropriation of funds meant for four lakh "non-existent" students.

The bench also ordered to fix responsibility and take action commensurate with the offense proved as a measure of redress.

Seven FIRs were registered in the state on the recommendation of the monitoring bureau.

In its 2019 order, the high court said the investigation is "very slow" after the FIR is filed. Subsequently the investigation was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a proper, thorough and prompt investigation.

It had asked the state vigilance to hand over all documents within a week of its order on November 2, 2019, and asked the CBI to file a status report within three months.
