Kolkata: At least 25 patients suffered complications after cataract surgery at the West Bengal government-run hospital in Kolkata's Metiabruz, prompting authorities to temporarily stop such operations, an official said on Wednesday.

He said, he underwent cataract surgery last Friday and Saturday.

It is not yet clear how the infection occurred, he said, adding that all the instruments used in the surgery are being tested to find out the cause of the infection.

"The reason behind the infection is not yet clear. We have stopped the cataract surgeries for now," the hospital official said.

"All 25 patients have been shifted to the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology. They are undergoing treatment there," he said.
