Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar on Monday said that cases are being registered under the new criminal laws without any difficulty.

"I am happy to report that two FIRs have been registered under the new laws in Amroha and Raebareli districts. Currently, cases are being registered everywhere without any difficulty," the DGP said.

DGP Kumar highlighted the proactive measures taken by the Uttar Pradesh Police to ease the transition.

"Uttar Pradesh Police has made arrangements for implementation of new criminal laws...The technical wing of police has completed networking arrangements and provided necessary software," Kumar said.

To ensure widespread awareness, the police have organized special events at all police stations. These events aim to inform public representatives, law enforcement personnel, and local citizens about the new laws.

The new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Sanhita penal laws came into effect from midnight on July 1.

"We have also uploaded information about the three new criminal laws on YouTube with full details. Important posters and pamphlets have been distributed in all police stations. The police have also created some electronic copies and uploaded them on all social media platforms to that everyone can be aware of the new laws," added the DGP.

Kumar clarified that cases that are ongoing or under investigation will not be affected by the new laws.

"Furthermore, it is important to mention that the laws that were in force before today will continue to be processed under the same articles. There will be no changes in those articles. The new laws and articles will be applicable only after July 1. "It will not affect the cases in progress nor those that are under investigation," added the DGP.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah today criticized the opposition parties for opposing the new penal laws and said that there are several occasions to play politics, but the new laws must be supported.

The three new laws received approval from Parliament on December 21, 2023. President Droupadi Murmu gave her approval on December 25, 2023 and it was published in the official gazette on the same day.

Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has 358 sections (instead of 511 sections in the IPC). A total of 20 new crimes have been added to the bill and the prison sentence has been increased for 33 of them. The amount of the fine has been increased in 83 crimes and the mandatory minimum sentence has been introduced in 23 crimes. Community service has been introduced for six crimes and 19 articles have been repealed or removed from the bill.

Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita has 531 sections (instead of 484 sections of CrPC). In total, 177 provisions of the bill were modified and nine new articles and 39 new subarticles were added. The bill has added 44 new provisions and clarifications. Timelines were added to 35 sections and audio and video provision was added in 35 places. In Sanhita, a total of 14 articles have been repealed and eliminated.

Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam has 170 provisions (instead of the original 167 provisions, and a total of 24 provisions have been amended. Two new provisions and six sub-provisions have been added and six provisions have been repealed or deleted in the Adhiniyam.
