A case has been registered against a 32-year-old police sub-inspector for allegedly raping and harassing a married woman constable in Thane, Maharashtra's Navi Mumbai township, an official said on Sunday.

The crime was committed in Sanpada area between 2020 and July 2022, he said.

The officer said the accused befriended the 26-year-old victim, both of whom were associated with Mumbai Police, and after promising to marry her, he allegedly raped her multiple times in a flat in Sanpada.

Police said that he also took Rs 19 lakh from the victim from time to time on one pretext or the other and returned only Rs 14.61 lakh.

Sanpada police station official said that the accused also chased the woman and asked her to leave her husband, failing which he threatened to kill her.

Initially a complaint was lodged at the Pant Nagar police station in neighboring Mumbai, on the basis of which a case was registered against the accused under sections 376 (rape), 376 (2) (n) (repeated rape) of the Indian Penal Code. 'FIR was registered. 354 (A) (sexual harassment), 354 (D) (stalking), 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) and 420 (cheating), the officer said.

He said it was transferred to Sanpada police for further investigation which registered a case on Saturday.

Zero FIR can be lodged in any police station, irrespective of the place or jurisdiction of the incident, and later it can be transferred to the appropriate police station.
