Thane: Police have registered a case against a local goon and three of his associates for allegedly threatening a 25-year-old businessman and attempting to extort money from him in Maharashtra's Thane district, an official said on Sunday. .

An official of Kalwa police station said the goon had approached the victim, who worked in fabrication, at his workplace in Kalwa area here and demanded Rs 50,000 per month as "protection money".

To scare the businessman, the accused said that he was recently released from jail in a criminal case and as per the FIR, even children in Kalwa area know about him.

It said that on June 27, the accused and his associates again met the victim near a political party office in Kalwa, reiterated their demand and threatened him with dire consequences if he failed to fulfill it.

The victim approached the police with a complaint, on the basis of which, on Friday, four persons were booked under Indian Penal Code sections 385 (putting a person in fear of causing hurt), 387 (putting a person in fear of death or causing fear of death) of the Indian Penal Code. FIR was registered under IPC. causing grievous hurt in order to commit extortion) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention).

Police said that the matter is being investigated.
