Sources in the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal say that 578 companies of CAPFs were deployed in West Bengal on Monday and in the fifth phase this number will increase to 762, an increase of 31.83 per cent.

Sources said this increase in CAPF deployment will happen despite the fact that the number of constituencies going to polls in the fifth phase in the state is slightly less than that in the fourth phase.

While voting was held in eight constituencies in the fourth phase, voting was held in seven seats in the fifth phase.

These seven constituencies are Serampore, Hooghly and Arambag in Hooghly district, Barrackpore and Bangaon in North 24 Parganas district and Howrah and Uluberia in Howrah district.

Of these seven constituencies, Barrackpore and Bangaon will be under special scrutiny of the ECI for different reasons.

While Bongaon is an India-Bangladesh border constituency, Barrackpore has a history of election-related violence and tension.

"This is in line with the Commission's plan to increase the number of CAPF companies to be deployed in a phased manner," a source in the CEO office said.

Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, said at the end of voting on Monday that the security cordon will be tightened by the ECI in the next phases.

"If ECI can maintain this quality of security, Trinamool Congress will raise more crores from the next phase," the official said.
