Recently, in a conversation with Variety, Pauly talked about directing 'All We Imagine as Light', "I was interested in women who come to a different place to work, and economically Are independent. And this was something that I saw growing up in a lot of women's families, and this idea that we have, that financial independence can somehow give us some kind of autonomy, is much more than that in India. The complex is what I wanted to explore in the film,” she shared, “when does one really get autonomy for our individual desires and choices.,

"Mumbai is a city that has a lot of contradictions. Because in our country it is a little easier for women to come to work. But it is also an expensive city. And it is a hard city to live in, to travel to every day I wanted it to have all these contradictions. And in a place like Mumbai, which is highly capitalist – there is a story in the film about a woman who is losing her house and this is the gentrification of Lower Parel and Dadar areas that I have seen my whole life. This is a very important part of Mumbai, a history we have to remember."

Payal Kapadia is a graduate from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).
