Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said in a news release on Wednesday that new international student study permits in 2025 will be reduced by 10 per cent from the 2024 target of 485,000, meaning those issued will be reduced by 10 per cent, Xinhua news agency reported. Study permits granted will be reduced to 437,000. Informed.

The number of study permits issued in 2026 will remain the same as in 2025, the release said.

The announcement follows a previous measure in January when the federal government said it would approve about 360,000 graduate study permits in 2024, a 35 percent decrease from the roughly 560,000 issued in 2023.

Canada's population is set to exceed 41 million in the first quarter of 2024 with a sharp increase in the number of temporary residents. Earlier this year, IRCC announced a reduction in the number of temporary residents from 6.5 per cent of Canada's total population to 5 per cent by 2026.
