Kolkata CPI(M) leader Kalatan Dasgupta was granted bail by the Calcutta High Court on Thursday in a case of alleged conspiracy to attack junior doctors protesting the rape and murder of his colleague at RG Kar Hospital and Medical College.

Dasgupta was arrested along with Sanjiv Das by the Bidhannagar city police after an alleged audio clip of a phone call was released by TMC leader Kunal Ghosh, who alleged that a conspiracy had been hatched to attack the doctors. outside Swashtya Bhawan in Salt Lake to defame Mamata. The police filed a suo motu case in connection with the audio clip and made the two arrests.

A bench of Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj said Dasgupta cannot be questioned in connection with the investigation or arrested without the consent of the high court.

Dasgupta was granted bail on a bond of Rs 500.

The court asked the state to file an affidavit citing the reasons for the arrest, noting that the leader also has the right to file an affidavit. The case will be heard again on November 18.

Dasgupta's lawyer Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee told the court that there had been no attack on the junior doctors and that the leader had not given any instructions for such an attack.

The prosecutor said Dasgupta and Das had spoken on the phone 171 times in the last 10 months. To this, Bhattacharjee said that these phone calls between two people can establish a conspiracy even if they were more than acquaintances.

The court also sought to know why Dasgupta was booked on bail in BNS sections while Das was booked on bail, particularly when "Das allegedly discussed such alleged plans".

Doctors have been camping outside Swasthya Bhawan, the headquarters of the state Health Department, with a series of demands, including better security at state hospitals following the rape and murder of his colleague.
