New Delhi: Former India openers Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman were on Tuesday interviewed by the BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) for the post of head coach of the national team.

The interview took place over a Zoom call and Gambhir, Raman and CAC chief Ashok Malhotra participated in it virtually.

"Yes, Gambhir appeared for the interview with the CAC. One round of discussions took place today. Another round of discussions is expected tomorrow," a BCCI source said.

"Raman was interviewed after Gambhir. This was also on Zoom. He also gave his presentation on his outlook and road map on Indian cricket. The interview lasted for about 40 minutes. Before watching the presentation the committee asked some preliminary questions, “The source said.

It is believed that Gambhir is the only candidate in contention and the announcement of his name is a mere formality, which can happen in the next 48 hours.

Details of his conversations with CAC chairman Malhotra and his colleagues Jatin Paranjape and Sulakshana Naik were not immediately known. Both Paranjape and Naik live in Mumbai.

It is believed that the discussions focused on the roadmap they have in mind for the next three years, which will include three ICC tournaments across all formats.

There is an Apex Council meeting on Tuesday evening and it is understood that BCCI Secretary Jay Shah will brief the members about the coach selection process before the final announcement.

CAC is also interviewing some interested candidates for the North Zone Selector post.

Gambhir, 42, recently led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL trophy as the team's mentor.

Current India coach Rahul Dravid will step down at the end of the team's T20 World Cup campaign in the US.

The team is currently in Barbados for the Super 8 matches after remaining unbeaten in the group league stage. It will face Afghanistan on Thursday.
